The two guys leading the tour were excellent, I can't remember their names but we were on the 13:15 tour on the 20th June. The information communicated was interesting and helpful. Their style was informative and informal. The captain knew how to manage the ship and never worried us. It was an excellent tour

How to make the most of your Amsterdam smoke cruise

  • Get there early: Aim to arrive at the departure dock at least 15 minutes before departure. This ensures a smooth check-in and gives you first pick of the plush lounge seats or the open-air deck.
  • Evening vs. day: Book a daytime cruise for the best photos of the architecture, or a night cruise to see the canal bridges glowing with thousands of fairy lights.
  • The ‘pre-cruise’ stop: Since no herbs are sold on the water, visit a nearby licensed shop in the Red Light District or near Central Station before you board.
  • Layer up: Even in summer, the breeze on the water can be chilly. Most boats provide blankets, but a light jacket or hoodie will keep you comfortable during the 60-70 minute trip.
  • Be social: The smoke boat Amsterdam experience is known for its friendly, communal vibe. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with fellow travellers from around the world.
  • Respect the captain: Always follow the safety instructions regarding standing up under low bridges—some of Amsterdam's stone tunnels have very little clearance!

Frequently asked questions about the smoke boat Amsterdam tours

Are the supplies provided on the tour?

No, you must bring your own. The smoke boat Amsterdam provides the environment and tools (like ashtrays), but the herb is BYO.

Can I smoke tobacco on the boat?

Most operators prohibit tobacco inside the boat due to Dutch regulations. You can usually use tobacco substitutes provided on board or smoke on the outdoor decks.

How long does the Amsterdam smoke cruise last?

Most tours run for approximately 60 to 70 minutes, giving you plenty of time to relax and see the main sights.

Are drinks and food allowed?

Where does the Amsterdam smoke boat depart from?

Departure points vary but are usually centrally located near Central Station or the Oudezijds Voorburgwal in the Red Light District.

Is there a restroom on board the Amsterdam smoke boat?

Most smaller lounge boats and ‘cloud boats’ do not have toilets on board due to their compact size. It is highly recommended to use the facilities at a nearby cafe before boarding.

Are the boats accessible for wheelchairs?

Due to the historic nature of the canal docks and the steep stairs on many traditional vessels, most smoke boats are not fully wheelchair accessible. Please contact the operator in advance to check for specific boarding assistance.

Is it okay to go on a smoke boat if I don't smoke?

Absolutely! Many guests join for the relaxed, lounge-style music and the non-judgmental atmosphere. However, be aware that the interior will be smoky, so it may not be ideal for those with respiratory sensitivities.

What happens if it rains during my Amsterdam smoke cruise?

Amsterdam's weather is unpredictable! Most boats are equipped with transparent sliding roofs or heated covers that allow you to enjoy the views and your smoke while staying completely dry.

Can I book the entire smoke boat for a private group?

Yes, most operators offer private hire options for bachelor parties, birthdays, or groups of friends. This allows you to customise the music and the route for a more exclusive smoke boat Amsterdam experience.

Are pets allowed on the cruise?

Generally, pets are not allowed on smoke cruises to ensure the comfort of all guests and the safety of the animals in a confined, smoky environment.

Is there a dress code for the tour?

There is no formal dress code. The vibe is casual, so wear whatever makes you feel relaxed and comfortable for a boat ride.
