Momentous milestone edition

2030 marks SAIL Amsterdam’s 11th edition. A historic convergence promises extra events, exhibitions, and a once-in-a-generation atmosphere citywide.

Duration and basic course of the festival

Held across five days, the event opens with the SAIL IN parade as vessels approach from IJmuiden, continues with ships docked for viewing in the IJ harbour, and ends with the dramatic SAIL OUT event.

Get up-close ship access

After the Sail In parade, the ships are docked for three days, and you can board most of them. Onboard these vessels, meet the crew and learn about their voyages, construction, and role in modern or historical navigation.

Enjoy the festival beyond the ships

With over 200 activities, SAIL Amsterdam offers far more than maritime sights. Expect food markets, live concerts, theatre, and fireworks, all creating a festive atmosphere that continues well into the evening every day.

Things to know before you book your SAIL Amsterdam 2030 tickets

  • Duration & demand: SAIL Amsterdam 2030 will run in August. Given the possibility of high demand, be sure to book your tickets early to secure your spot.
  • Better perspective: Watching from the quay is free but overcrowded. Cruises take you right alongside the tall ships, offering uninterrupted views from the water that shore spectators cannot experience.
  • Boat options: Enclosed saloon boats provide comfort, but open boats deliver exclusivity. Their open design ensures uninterrupted sightlines, giving passengers exceptional perspectives of the ships throughout the harbour.
  • Cruise options: Various types of cruise tickets are available, ranging from short one-hour sightseeing tours to longer five-hour sails that include snacks, lunch, and drinks. Evening tickets add fireworks views and celebratory drinks, making the night experience especially memorable.
  • Ceremonial cruises: For something extra special, choose a cruise during the SAIL IN or SAIL OUT parades to witness tall ships moving in orchestrated formation, transforming arrival and departure into extraordinary once-in-a-lifetime ceremonies.

Experience SAIL Amsterdam from shore vs. from water

Experience from the shore

Relax right along the IJ River, enjoying the incredible atmosphere, live music, and diverse food and drink stalls. This view lets you watch the majestic ships sail past.

Why choose this: Perfect if you want a slower, more relaxed pace. It's ideal for enjoying the festival vibes, picnics, and performances without being on the move.

Experience from the water

Board a specialised tour boat, luxurious dinner cruise, lively party boat, or even a private sloop. You'll be sailing among the towering mastheads and historic vessels.

Why choose this: This is the only way to get truly up close and personal with the tall ships, offering unparalleled views and an immersive sailing experience.

Events & programs

Day 1

The first day opens with Tall Ships arriving in the celebrated SAIL In Parade (10am to 7pm), sailing from the sea to Amsterdam harbour. Expect cannon salutes, national anthems, and sailors high in the rigging.

Day 2–4

These are the main events where you can walk by the ships. There will be food trucks (though expensive), a Ferris Wheel (for some great views) and some of the tall ships are open for boarding from 10am to 8pm, free of charge. Each night, there will be SAIL On Stage concerts starting at 9pm featuring diverse musical genres, from Concertgebouw Orchestra performances to electronic dance music.

Day 5

This is the day of the goodbye parade: The SAIL-Out. It begins at 2pm and goes on until 7pm. Ships leave Amsterdam, and you can be in the crowds to wave farewell. You can see the boats anywhere from the quay all the way up to the ocean, 22km out. Most people watch in front of the Centraal Station.

  • If you haven’t been able to get your hands on the SAIL-IN parade, don’t worry! Try to arrive early to grab a good viewing spot along the IJ or on one of the bridges.
  • Plan for multiple viewing points! See the ships from various angles—visit the quays, bridges, rooftops (like NEMO Science Museum), or book a waterside restaurant with a view.
  • Parking is nearly impossible during this time. Hop on a tram, ferry, or rent a bike to explore the event area easily.
  • Don’t leave after sunset because many ships are beautifully illuminated, and some evenings include fireworks or live performances.
  • Bring binoculars or zoom your camera lens to get a closer look at the ship details, rigging, and onboard activities from the shore or a crowded boat.
  • If you want to board the tall ships, go in the morning because the lines get long fast, especially for iconic vessels.
  • Many crew members love sharing stories, so don’t be shy! Ask questions and learn about life at sea and ship traditions.
  • While most people visit during the Sail In, the final day, the Sail Out, is often less crowded.

Best places to see the Sail-In Parade in Amsterdam

  • IJpromenade: A popular, long green strip along the canal, providing excellent sightlines. It's a favourite among locals and tourists for its open atmosphere. Take the free ferry from Amsterdam Central Train Station to Buiksloterweg. This area fills up fast, so early arrival is key.
  • Free ferries: Hop directly onto one of the free commuter ferries behind Central Station to cross the IJ. You'll literally glide between the majestic ships as they enter the city. It’s completely free, highly immersive, and offers constantly changing, spectacular perspectives of the fleet.
  • Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ: The final destination for the ships in the IJ-haven. The structure provides a great place to sit, and the roof-like design ensures excellent, eye-level views of the parade. There are plenty of food trucks and facilities nearby, making this a comfortable base for watching the arrival.
  • NDSM Wharf: Located on the north side of the IJ, this area offers wide-open views and a lively, cultural atmosphere with a distinctly industrial-chic vibe. Take the ferry from Centraal Station directly to NDSM and enjoy the vibrant, festival-like energy of Amsterdam Noord.
  • Eric Vökel Riverfront Suites: This spot offers amazing, uncrowded views as the ships enter, perfect if you prefer peace over crowds. A café is nearby for breaks and drinks. Bring binoculars for a truly detailed, close-up experience of the vessels.
  • Stenenhoofd: A free, festival-like atmosphere with basic amenities. Features a small beach and offers beach chair rentals, making it a comfortable spot to settle in. Perfect if you want reliable facilities (drinks, toilets) close by while enjoying the parade's festive energy.
  • A’DAM Tower rooftop: See the entire parade from above! Head to the rooftop of the A'DAM Tower (across the IJ), where you can swing high above the ships or enjoy a drink at the Madam Skybar. This is a ticketed, premium experience that offers a spectacular 360-degree photo opportunity overlooking the water and the city.
  • REM Eiland Restaurant: This former pirate radio and TV station, now a restaurant, boasts a roof terrace towering 22 meters above sea level. You get a stunning, unobstructed 360-degree view. Book a table well in advance! This guarantees a fantastic vantage point for the parade without having to fight the crowds below.
  • Lowlander Botanical Bar & Restaurant: Located right on the waterfront in Amsterdam Noord, its terrace offers a direct, front-row experience. The venue often hosts exceptional viewing parties. Look out for Lowlander's special SAIL events, which include live music, great food, and plenty of Lowlander brews.
  • North Sea canal banks: A quieter, more tranquil choice outside of Amsterdam's crowded centre. Watch the ships make their stately journey inland along the canal banks around IJmuiden. Enjoy a peaceful setting and typically fewer crowds. Good alternatives nearby include the Koffiepost or Cafeteria Visser Spaarnwoude.
  • IJmuiden locks: See the massive ships emerge from the North Sea and manoeuvre through the locks before sailing towards Amsterdam. Great spots include Kop van de Haven before the locks or along the Kanaaldijk just after the locks open.

What happens to the ships after SAIL Amsterdam?

After SAIL Amsterdam ends, the ships sail out in a grand farewell parade on Sunday, August 24, 2030. They return through the North Sea Canal toward the open sea, heading back to home ports, other maritime festivals, or training voyages. Normal shipping resumes once the IJmuiden lock complex reopens after the SAIL-Out Parade.
